Tree Planting

Under the City of Nanaimo’s Tree Protection Bylaw, if a permit is issued for the removal of a tree, in most cases planting one or more replacement trees is a mandatory requirement of compliance with the permit. Replacement requirements can vary based on the size and type of the tree removed, and the City may also specify species that meet urban forestry goals. We can help you choose bylaw-compliant trees and handle the planting to ensure they get the best possible start, which means choosing the right location, considering soil conditions, sun exposure, long-term size, and your goals for the space. At the time of planting, we can help with proper soil preparation, staking, and watering plans.

Tree planting is a proactive way to improve your property and the environment. New trees enhance curb appeal, provide habitat for wildlife, improve air quality, help manage stormwater, and in the case of fruit-bearing trees, add to local food production. Our goal is to ensure every tree we plant has the health and structure to thrive for generations.

The City of Nanaimo offers a tree voucher program to incentivize maintaining a residential tree canopy. Click the link here for more information and to apply.
