Tree Removals

Tree removal is sometimes necessary—but it’s never a decision that should be taken lightly. At Yeomen Tree Service Co-operative, our priority is always the long-term health of the urban forest, the safety of the community, and the ecological value that trees provide. The first thing is to consider the motives behind removal of a tree to see if removal is justified or if the same needs can be met through other means. If a tree is dead, in irreversible decline, or is interfering with critical infrastructure, then removal may be the best option.

Within the limits of the City of Nanaimo, the prospect of tree removal is subject to bylaw 7126. Property owners may remove up to four non-significant trees per calendar year from their parcel, provided there is no other restrictions on the property. However, trees on steep slopes, riparian zones, or designated as wildlife habitat (e.g., eagle or heron nesting trees) are subject to stricter protections. Our team helps navigate these distinctions and can assist with the permit application process when required.

If you are unsure whether a tree should be removed, or if you are legally allowed to remove it, reach out to us. We offer assessments, risk evaluations, and advice that is compliant with the appropriate jurisdiction. If removal is necessary, we can ensure the work is done safely, responsibly, and in compliance with all regulations. Please check our section on: Do I need a permit?
