Tree Risk Assessment

A tree risk assessment is a professional evaluation of a tree’s condition and the likelihood that it may fail and cause harm to people, property, or infrastructure. As part of our arboriculture consulting services, and one of our most commonly requested offerings, this process involves inspecting the tree’s structure, health, and surrounding environment to identify defects such as decay, cracks, root instability, or deadwood. The goal is to assess both the probability of failure and the potential consequences, and to document findings in a clear and defensible report.

Levels of Tree Risk Assessment

  • Level 1 – Limited Visual Assessment: A ground-based visual check to identify obvious defects or immediate hazards.

  • Level 2 – Basic Assessment: A thorough visual inspection from the ground, including site conditions and visible structural issues, possibly also using sampling techniques if deemed necessary.

  • Level 3 – Advanced Assessment: A detailed evaluation that includes climbing the tree for a visual inspection of the canopy and potentially other specialized diagnostic tools.

Tree risk assessments are most often needed when a tree shows signs of decline or structural weakness, after storm events, or when concerns are raised about safety near homes, driveways, or public spaces. They are also an important step in navigating municipal regulations. In many cases, protected trees may be eligible for removal if they are determined to pose a significant hazard, and a formal tree risk assessment is often required as part of the permitting process. Engaging an arborist early can help clarify your options, reduce liability, and support informed decision-making.
